American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It led several flight controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.
