Anthony Barry Shares The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry featured at a lower division club. Today, he is focused supporting the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His path from the pitch to the sidelines started with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.
Rapid Rise
Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he built a reputation for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career led him to elite sides, and he held roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like world-class talents. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours all the time, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”.
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry says. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up with developments and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to increase tempo in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for his pro license, he felt anxious about the presentation, as his cohort contained luminaries including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.
He completed the course as the best in his year, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.
The next manager with the club took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
