Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene showed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an court order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being opened”.
