A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.

"The first tuna heralds fortune," remarked the business owner, a notable bidder at the yearly first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the successful bidder told reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This new purchase exceeds his previous historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its locations nationwide.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for diners at the winner's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one happy customer.
