Disclosed Communications Depict Epstein and Larry Summers as Confidantes
A series of exchanges between adjudicated child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and former US finance chief Larry Summers came to light this week, revealing the pair were close contacts.
The messages, dating from 2013 to early 2019, show the two men discussing personal ā and at times improper ā views on political matters and personal connections.
I am attempting to understand why [the] American elite believe if u kill your baby by violence and desertion it must be irrelevant to your acceptance to Harvard,ā|āIām trying to|I am attempting to|I'm struggling to} determine why [the] American elite feel if u kill your baby by violence and desertion it must be not a factor to your admission to Harvard,ā} Summers emailed to Epstein in a 2017 email. āBut made advances toward a few women 10 years ago and canāt work at a network or think tank. DO NOT REPEAT THIS OBSERVATION.ā
Back then, Harvard University was dealing with an admissions debate after a formerly incarcerated womanās admission to a PhD program. Summers, a former president of the university who lost his position amid a uproar after making discriminatory comments about women in academia, continued in the correspondence to Epstein: I noted that half of the IQ in [the] world was held by women without mentioning they are more than 51 percent of society.ā
Summers was previously a leading light in the Democratic Party circles ā a one-time treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, one of the key architects of Barack Obamaās response to the economic downturn, and a steadfast figure in the left-leaning punditry. But concerns have lingered about his connection with Epstein, a longtime connection of Donald Trump. Epstein was accused of a wide-ranging child sex trafficking operation before his death in jail in 2019 in New York City.
Following the release of a previous tranche of emails between Epstein and Summers in a 2023 article, a representative for Summers commented that he āis very sorry for being in contact with Epstein after his guilty verdictā.
Democratic lawmakers made public emails from the Epstein estate this week that indicate Epstein thought Trump was had knowledge of conduct by the now-convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. In retaliation, GOP lawmakers issued a more extensive batch of 20,000 emails from the Epstein estate.
These records show that Summers maintained amicable contact with the found guilty child sex trafficker well into 2019, with the most recent email exchange happening only months before Epsteinās detention.
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday that he would be asking the Department of Justice and the FBI to look into Epsteinās āinvolvement and connectionā with Summers, among other prominent Democrats and industry figures.
In the emails, Summers and Epstein discuss politics ā especially Summersās contempt for Trump ā as well as the details of charitable social networking ā and women. Summers, 70, confided in Epstein in a 2019 exchange about his romantic gestures toward an unidentified woman, and being turned down.
āshes smart. making you pay for past errors,ā Epstein replied in an exchange on 16 March. ādisregard the 'daddy' comment, I'm going out with the motorcycle guy, you handled it well.. irritation indicates concern., no complaining demonstrated strength.ā
Summers affirmed his sorrow in a recent statement. āI harbor significant regrets in my lifetime,ā he wrote. āIāve expressed this previously: my relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was a grave mistake.ā
Summers was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Epstein gave more than $9m to Harvard and its related programs between 1998 and 2008, and was named a visiting fellow to conduct research. The university later found Epstein āwas missing the educational background visiting fellows typically possess and his application outlined a course of study Epstein was unqualified to pursueā.
Harvard only discontinued accepting Epsteinās donations after he pleaded guilty to child sex offenses in 2008.
By that time Obamaās career was advancing. Summers would later secure appointment as director of the White House economic advisory body from January 2009 until November 2010.
After Summers left the White House, he began requesting Epstein for philanthropic advice for his wife, Elisa New, a Harvard professor pursuing a poetry project. Epstein and his foundations made philanthropic donations to projects associated with Summersās wife, and the two men saw each other a dozen times between 2013 and 2016, often for dinner.
After news about Epsteinās donations came out, Newās charity made a donation āabove and beyondā of that received to combatting sex trafficking organizations.
