Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now plans to appear with Cuomo in communities where he holds strong support.
“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor commented.
The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
