Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
He commented in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".
Summers, who formerly led Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed messages revealed that the official corresponded with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it understood Summers' decision to resign.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," the company stated.
Political Context
This development comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his position on the matter following objections from his followers.
Message Details
A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the Congressional committee last week referenced several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the academic to influential international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the public, he stated he took "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Professional History
The economist served in senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on Monday, he said he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer associated with the institution.
Summers joined the leadership of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
