The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
